Klavirski jazzovski trio utegne biti nekaj precej rigidnega, "atrofirana, klišejska forma", ki je verjetno "znala potegniti kvečjemu pred desetletji". Naši tokratni gromki gostje dokazujejo, da temu ni nujno tako. Brez dvoma gre za eno izmed vrhunskih tovrstnih zasedb na svetu. V tem trenutku so namreč le redki pianisti v družbi s strunarjem in tolkalcem sposobni ponuditi iritantno, subtilno, prevprašujočo, niansirano, implicitno, pa tudi eksplicitno navdušujočo godbo: Misha Mengelberg, Marilyn Crispell, Cecil Taylor in - iz rahlo "drugih" jazzovskih branž - Dave Burrell, Brad Mehldau, Georg Graewe, Irene Schweitzer, Muhal Richard Abrams, Anthony Coleman.

Bostonski priseljeni Grk [b]Pandelis Karayorgis[eb] je izjemen, dovolj izviren pianist. Njegovo delo je resno, zvedavo, seže daleč naprej, precej vstran, obenem pa je še dostopno, fluidno, mično enigmatično. Poglablja se v perkusivne zmožnosti inštrumenta, preigrava raznolike barvne spektre, preskuša resonančni potencial. [i]And he swings like hell.[ei] Poslušalna koncentracija se v primeru, ki vleče na plano historične mejnike, smele pristope, kakor so jih obvladovali Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Lennie Tristano in (Karayorgisov učitelj) Paul Bley, zmerom bogato poplača. Obeta se torej koncert srčne, iskrene avantgodbe.

Danes 42-letni Karayorgis je bil rojen in odrasel v Grčiji, sredi osemdesetih pa se je preselil v Boston, kjer je študiral na prestižnem New England Conservatory in se učil pri legendarnih mojstrih: Paul Bley, Dave Holland, Geri Allen, Cecil McBee, Joe Maneri, George Russell in Jimmy Giuffre. �e za študijskih let se je vključil v živahno mestno jazzovsko sceno in tik po formalni diplomi 1989. objavil prvi solističen album. Odtistihdob se njegova dela redno pojavljajo na letnih "top 10" seznamih najboljših kritično ocenjenih plošč po ključnih jazzovskih ravijah kakor [i]Coda[ei], [i]Cadence[ei], [i]Jazziz[ei] in [i]Jazz Times[ei]. Karayorgis redno sodeluje z velikani sodobnega jazza: Joe in Mat Maneri, Ken Vandermark, Michael Formanek, Guillermo Gregorio, že vrsto let pa uspešno vodi dva ključna projekta - The Pandelis Karayorgis Trio in The MI3. V obeh zasedbah je kontrabasist sijajen, intonančno perfekten, "ozemljeno zvedav", luciden in delaven mož po imenu [b]Nate McBride[eb]. Pri nas ga poznamo vsaj z nastopov Spaceways Inc. (+ Ken Vandermark + Hamid Drake) v metelkovski Menzi pri koritu in (družno z italijanskimi Zu) na mariborskem Štuku (Druga godba 2003) ter z letošnjega JazzFesta v Cerknem, kjer se je McBride predstavil s "powerhouse" triom FME [=Free Music Ensemble], v katerem je publiko ogrel skupaj s Kenom Vandermarkom, tolkalec je bil Paal Nilssen-Love. Tokratni gost za bobni bo tenkočutnež, eden izmed precej iskanih jazzovskih inventivcev ta hip, [b]Randy Peterson[eb], znan predvsem kot stalni član Joe Maneri Quarteta.

Vplivi Theloniousa Monka, Lennieja Tristana in Cecila Taylorja so pri Karayorgisu nevprašljivi, vprašamo se torej, po čem se razlikuje od vseh drugih, ki so sledili močnim vplivom omenjene trojice. Podobno so se vprašali tudi nekateri avtorji citatov, ki jih nizamo spodaj. In kakor je prebrati, pri tem nikakor niso skrivali svojega navdušenja:

Pianist Pandelis Karayorgis has worked with bassist Nate McBride and drummer Randy Peterson in various settings for the better part of a decade. In 1997 they came together to form the Pandelis Karayorgis Trio. Since then they have recorded two CDs: [i]Heart And Sack[ei] (Leo Lab ) in 1998 and [i]Blood Ballad[ei] (Leo Records) in 2001.

The trio has been featured by Kevin Whitehead on NPR's Fresh Air and has received critical acclaim internationally, including several critics' "best of the year" picks.
